Transition Minerals

Shedding light on climate risks for critical minerals

The potential future scarcity of minerals that are needed to meet renewable energy and clean transportation targets is not a secret. The rapid adoption of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources caused the demand for critical minerals to skyrocket. However, production and processing have not matched the pace of growth.

Recent analyses suggests that we might hit a critical minerals supply valley some time in the next decade. If that happens, we will certainly not be able to reach GHG emission reduction targets.

Climate change will make these existing challenges of the critical minerals sector much worse, particularly in areas like social license to operate, mining engineering and design or minerals processing reliability.

Our work on critical minerals significantly pushes forward the state-of-knowledge on the impacts of climate change on the critical minerals sector.
